Country overview

Malta is an island country in southern Europe. An archipelago located in the Mediterranean, 80 km from Sicily, 284 km from Tunisia and 333 km from Libya, it is the smallest member state of the European Union. The country has two official languages, Maltese and English. Italian, the official language until 1934, is quite widespread, known at least at a basic level by 62% of Maltese. Its particular geographical area has made the island a strategic place for millennia, where Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Templars, French and English have alternated, making the country a jumble of cultures and a place rich in history and architecture. Also for this reason, Malta is a country that lives mainly on tourism and boasts 3 UNESCO sites; tourism has in fact increased significantly in recent years and with it the structures used for this purpose. Malta's major resources are limestone, a favorable geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean and a very productive workforce. Malta produces around 20% of its own needs, has limited drinking water resources and no energy sources available on its territory. At an industrial level, the textile and electronic sectors are also important. Malta is a parliamentary republic founded on representative democracy, whose parliamentary and public administration system is modeled on the Westminster system. Malta's purely Mediterranean climate is characterized by hot, sunny and dry summers and temperate but rainy and windy winters. Malta is also one of the sunniest countries in Europe, with over 300.000 hours of sunshine per year. Its currency is the euro.

Location

Malta is an excellent country in terms of its attractiveness, not only for tourists. In addition to the architectural and landscape beauties and the temperate climate, Malta boasts excellent public services and a low level of crime. More polluted than other islands, also due to the discreet development of industries, it nevertheless remains a highly liveable and certainly pleasant country.

Freedom

Despite being a small island, Malta boasts a long history that has made the country multicultural, tolerant and above all, also thanks to its inevitable links with European history, a solid, long-standing and very liberal democracy. Even more, the need to attract foreign investments has ensured that the economic system is structured in an extremely free way, so much so as to place the island at the top of the economic freedom index. The judicial system is also extremely efficient and corruption is decidedly low compared to the rest of Mediterranean Europe.

Lifestyle

The quality of life in Malta is decidedly high, but the costs of goods are also above average compared to similar countries. The services are of an excellent standard. The country combines the typical tranquility of island life with the typically Western style, without neglecting the nuances of the various cultures that have characterized its history.

Taxation

Despite an average "rate", there are numerous benefits for those who transfer their tax residence there (such as the non-taxation of a capital gain produced abroad) and specific laws (such as, for example, the law on capital gains from cryptocurrencies, which being been assimilated to money, they are not subject to taxation). There are no inheritance taxes and VAT is 18%. Malta adheres to the CRS and regularly exchanges tax information with foreign countries; it is therefore not included in any black list.

Expat

Malta offers a long series of options for obtaining both permanent residency (for pensioners, digital nomads, highly qualified people), with consequent tax benefits, and citizenship in the country, including a CBI Program; the cost of the passport is among the highest on the market, but it allows you to obtain an EU passport which ranks among the top of the index. Furthermore, in Malta there is no death penalty and there is no compulsory military service.

Business

Malta is also one of the best places in the world to open your own business: in addition to the high economic freedom and efficiency of services, Malta's tax system is among the most attractive in the world due to the numerous benefits provided; all within a solid context like the European one, which also guarantees greater security for investments. Definitely a very interesting solution for entrepreneurs all over the world.

Family

Apart from the healthcare system, which does not place Malta among the top places in the healthcare index, Malta remains a very attractive country for families thanks to the efficiency of the services, the quality of the education system and the high level of safety, circumstances that put the country in an excellent position in the "family friendly index".

Retirement

Choosing Malta as a destination for retirees can be a good solution, as demonstrated by its positioning in the Global Retirement Index: Malta guarantees a peaceful life, with a high style and an excellent range of services. However, the cost of living is slightly above average compared to other similar countries, also thanks to its geographical location in Europe and the adoption of the euro.

Future

Malta is also very advanced in terms of technological innovation and above all environmental protection; efficient structures and great economic freedom allow Malta to face future challenges and the geopolitical context guarantees the island a high level of security.
